Research Study for a Novel Medical Device in Eye Surgery
I was contracted by a medical device startup to conduct research for a novel device. This project involved experiment design and rigorous testing in order to provide critical findings to substantiate key patent claims.
The goal of the study was to investigate the effects of mechanical vibrations on the flow behavior of viscous fluids ejected from a syringe. I designed an experimental setup mimicking the function of a syringe pump using 3D CAD software and 3D printing techniques. The setup was instrumented with electromechanical control modules to drive specialized inputs to the syringe pump. I developed a Python and OpenCV computer-vision tracking suite to automate real-time drop-centroid detection, optical calibration, and quantitative volumetric flow analysis to monitor the formation of droplets at the distal end of a needle.
The findings allowed us to demonstrate statistically significant flow enhancement using specialized controller design and ultimately are driving the continued development of an impactful new medical device.
